Задачами Департамента являются:
- проведение единой государственной политики в сфере энергосбережения, использования возобновляемых источников энергии
- контроль за соответствием технико-экономических показателей энергопотребляющего и энергогенерирующего оборудования нормам и требованиям в сфере энергосбережения
- участие в проведении в установленном порядке государственной экспертизы энергетической эффективности
- обеспечение в установленном порядке надзора за:
     - рациональным использованием топлива, электрической и тепловой энергии
     - осуществлением пользователями и производителями топливно-энергетических ресурсов мер по экономии этих ресурсов и соблюдением норм расхода котельно-печного топлива, электрической и тепловой энергии

Департамент в соответствии с возложенными на него задачами:
- регулирует в соответствии с законодательством деятельность юридических и физических лиц по эффективному использованию топливно-энергетических ресурсов и энергосбережению
- осуществляет оценку выполнения установленных в соответствии с законодательством показателей в сфере энергосбережения
- подготавливает совместно с заинтересованными республиканскими органами государственного управления, иными организациями, подчиненными Правительству Республики Беларусь, местными исполнительными и распорядительными органами предложения по формированию государственной политики в сфере энергосбережения
- формирует государственные программы в сфере энергосбережения и осуществляет мониторинг их реализации
- формирует и утверждает сводный перечень мероприятий в сфере энергосбережения, финансирование которых осуществляется с участием средств республиканского бюджета
- осуществляет в соответствии с законодательством функции распорядителя средств республиканского бюджета, выделенных для финансирования государственной программы в сфере энергосбережения
- разрабатывает критерии оценки эффективности использования топливно-энергетических ресурсов
- способствует созданию экономических условий для повышения заинтересованности юридических и физических лиц в эффективном использовании топливно-энергетических ресурсов
- разрабатывает и вносит в установленном порядке предложения по:
     - стимулированию энергосбережения
     -  показателям в сфере энергосбережения и методологии их расчета для республиканских органов государственного управления, иных организаций, подчиненных Правительству Республики Беларусь, облисполкомов и Минского горисполкома на основе важнейших параметров прогноза социально-экономического развития республики, поручений Президента Республики Беларусь
     - повышению энергоэффективности различных сфер экономики

The Department's tasks include:
- implementing a unified state policy in the field of energy conservation and the use of renewable energy sources
- monitoring compliance with the technical and economic indicators of energy-consuming and energy-generating equipment with the norms and requirements in the field of energy conservation
- participating in the state energy efficiency expertise in accordance with the established procedure
- ensuring supervision in accordance with the established procedure for:
     - the rational use of fuel, electric and thermal energy
     - implementation by users and producers of fuel and energy resources of measures to save these resources and compliance with the standards for consumption of boiler and furnace fuel, electric and thermal energy

In accordance with its assigned tasks, the Department:
- regulates, in accordance with the legislation, the activities of legal entities and individuals related to the efficient use of fuel and energy resources and energy conservation
- evaluates the implementation of the energy conservation indicators established in accordance with the legislation
- prepares, in cooperation with the relevant republican state administration bodies and other organizations subordinate to the Government of the Republic of Belarus, as well as local executive and administrative bodies, proposals for the formation of state policy in the field of energy conservation
- develops state programs in the field of energy conservation and monitors their implementation
- forms and approves a consolidated list of energy saving measures that are financed from the republican budget
- performs, in accordance with the legislation, the functions of the manager of the republican budget funds allocated for financing the state program in the field of energy saving
- develops criteria for assessing the efficiency of the use of fuel and energy resources
- contributes to the creation of economic conditions for increasing the interest of legal entities and individuals in the efficient use of fuel and energy resources
- develops and submits proposals in accordance with the established procedure for:
     - stimulating energy saving
     - indicators in the field of energy conservation and the methodology for their calculation for the republican bodies of state administration, other organizations subordinate to the Government of the Republic of Belarus, regional executive committees, and the Minsk City Executive Committee, based on the most important parameters of the forecast for the socioeconomic development of the Republic, and instructions from the President of the Republic of Belarus
     - improving the energy efficiency of various sectors of the economy
